The complexely contructed shields of Karkar island off the coast from Madang in Papua New Goinea are some of the rarest shields in Oceania. They were constructed of three wooden panels lashed together and completely covered by horizontal bands of cane.
Harry Beran writes in “Shields of Melanesia” : “Karkar shields are relatively rare in museum collectgions as warfare was suppressed around 1900”. (Beran and Craig, 2005, p. 49)
