Mumuye figure

Nigeria
Height: 54 cm
Wood

The stylized head is distinguished by the originality of its cut. The top of the skull is punctuated by small vertical incisions. Large ears are gently spread out along the face. The eyes are large and round, the nose is on the contrary tapered. Pierced in its lower part, it must have had an ornamental stick which has now disappeared. The discreet mouth is in the wake of the nasal septum.

The body is powerful. Under broad shoulders, a cylindrical bust emanates, framed by solid muscular arms. Surprisingly robust, they are delicately decorated with horizontal scarifications. The hands are turned towards the very prominent umbilicus. In the center of the hips, a female sex is slightly outlined. The very schematized legs are modeled according to a skilful juxtaposition of planes, playing on successive zigzagging rhythms.

This strikingly modern work is a strong testimony to the creativity of Mumuye sculptors.
