These ritual items frequently carved from a part of an old canoe were displayed and stored in the men ceremonial house , ritual center of all the community. they incarn the spirit of a protective ancestor. This creative way to represent the human face has been a powerful source of inspiration for modern artists especially for the surrealists ones as Max Ernst who owned a similar gope in his collection.
