Kokuta Suda is one of the most important Mid-century Japanese abstract artists. Starting as a figurative painter, he shifted to abstract after intensely studying Zen Buddhism. Suda tried to express the profound world of Zen by painting abstract works from the 1950’s for over 20 years, including the present work. Decades after his passing, the energy and vibration imbued in these powerfully spiritual works still continue to captivate the viewer today.
