Ammata mask

Dogon, Mali
Late 19th – Early 20th Century
Height: 113 cm
Wood, remnants of white paint, plant fibers

This mask with traces of white paint, is geometric in style. The arrow straight nose is flanked by large eyeholes in a rectangular, recessed face, which ends below tubular mouth in a slighlty projecting, square chin. What appear to be ears are actually upright horns, indicating that the mask depicts a mythical antelope known as Walu.
