The first bowls, part of tomb equipment like this example, appeared around the third millennium BC. They are dated to the early Dynastic or Thinite Period.
Except the small, flattened base the outside of the bowl is convex in shape. Near the rim it curves inwards and the rim is squared off in a way similar to other dishes and bowls of this period. The interior is smooth and concave in shape.
