The Dayak of Borneo used masks for various rituals (e.g. for initiations and before headhunting expeditions) or at ceremonies (before and at the end of harvests). This ancient mask is a beautiful and well-preserved survivor of a very rare, early type. Its exquisite carving with strong features effectively highlighted by a minimum of white pigments (kaolin?) reveal the hand of a highly experienced carver.
