The large anthropomorphic Abelam figures are made for ceremonies and mainly for initiations. The sculptures were kept in the Ceremonial House where they were revealed to new initiates. These figures are representations of the main spirit among the Abelam, Nggwalndu, a mythical ancestor who is considered the founder of the clan and the receptacle for the spirits of all deceased members of the clan.
