Kota Reliquary Figure

Kota peoples, Gabon
Circa 1880
Height: 42.5 cm – Width: 13.5 cm – Depth: 6 cm
Wood, copper, brass, bone

Kota reliquary figures are among the most iconic sculptures of traditional African art. Made of wood with appliqués of various metals, they have attracted the attention of some of the greatest artists and art collectors since the beginning of the 20th century. The historic piece shown here belongs to the very limited corpus of small Kota reliquaries. Its intense expression derives from its eyes made of bone, a rare detail present on only the oldest examples.
