Mask sykele

Civilization Bobo, Burkina Faso
End of 19th century or earlier
Height: 165 cm
Wood, iron and pigments

The Bobo use masks in three major contexts. Masks appear at harvest time, in male initiations, and they participate in burials and funerals. The primary context is initiation.
There is a strong bond between masks and ancestors. It is said that the spirit of the deceased is accompanied on the journey into the afterlife by a mask, and that the spirit of the dead may take up temporary residence in a mask.
