RARE TIGER RUG

Tibet
19th century
Height: 160 cm – Width: 80 cm
Wool

Tiger Rugs from Tibet are the most famous and consistently in-demand group in the Central and East Asian rug world. Their attractive tiger felt design and their great rarity contributed to their aura as a hallmark of Tibetan culture. Authentic ancient Tiger rugs very rarely appear in the market. This particular example is in very good and color-fresh condition with superb, subtle colour variations, the so-called abrash. It depicts a stylized tiger pelt without its feet, head and tail – the most desirable composition of all Tibetan Tiger rugs. The rug looks most attractive when mounted and hung on a wall (as shown in our NY apartment), but can obviously be displayed on a floor as well.
