Twa Caryatid Headrest

Kuba peoples, Twa sub-group, Kasai region, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Circa 1900
Height: 18 cm – Width: 27 cm
Wood

This neckrest, from the Twa sub-group of the Kuba kingdom, is one of a rare type of which only a dozen or so examples have survived. In a poetic invention the pillow element is formed by the conjoined tresses of the two addorsed bust-form figures that support it. The headrest’s beautiful honey patina attests to its many years of use.
