Exceptional Fon altar statue from Benin, used for divination and protection. The body of the statue, of which only the head remains, is entirely covered with several layers of padlocks of various sizes and periods. Each of them corresponds to the oath following a consultation with the priest-soothsayer, guaranteeing the effective protection granted by the Voodoo deity. Beautiful old patina, partially scabby.
