Beja shields, which were still used by some Mahadist fighters during revolts against the British power at the end of the 19th century, are among the mythical symbols of African warrior power. The shield in the Ferrari De La Salle collection, the only one known to be carved in elephant hide, is the most beautiful and oldest known.
