Invoked during initiation ritual, the rare kakungu mask ensured the good behavior of the novices: the eminently sculptural character of their physiognomy – characterized by a rounded forehead with marked brow bone, swollen cheeks and prominent chin – aimed to inspire respect among young people. As a protective entity, kakungu also ensured the well-being of future initiates, repelling evil forces and malevolent people.
